RegDefense is a more than adequate registry cleaner. Not loaded with a lot of extra features, it does an aggressive job of finding registry errors. In a back to back testing with two other leading registry cleaners, we ran RegDefense and then two other cleaners one after the other without fixing or doing anything to our machine. In other words, each cleaner had the same environment to scan, with no changes having been made to that environment in between time.

What we found was that RegDefense located over 1300 more errors than its closest competitor in this test. It seems that different registry developers put a different value on the registry entries they go after, hence a difference in the amount of errors found. Although it did take nearly four minutes to run through the scanning procedure, that's about par for the course in most registry cleaners. RegDefense box jpg

RegDefense seems to be very aggressive in its search algorithm. This can either be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the kind of errors the algorithm targets and whether removing those errors will adversely affect computer performance. For those utilities that are aggressive, this could be a potential problem if it were not for the built-in registry back up that occurs before any repairs are made. Fortunately, users of RegDefense have that built-in back up so that they may undo any unfortunate registry key deletions.

The extra features included with this cleaner, in addition to the Scan tab, are: a Settings tab which allows the user to set up General Settings for the software, to address an Ignore list, and to set up an automated Schedule of regular scans. It of course contains a Backup tab which records the automatic backups that occur each time you fix the registry. As with most high end registry utilities, it also includes a Manage Startup tab that gives users easy access to disable any programs that are not absolutely essential at machine startup, thus enabling quicker boot times. And the last feature is a Results tab which lists the various areas that have been scanned in the most recent scanning and the number of errors, cleaned entries, and ignored entries.

One of the selling points that the developer's website emphasizes is the compatibility of RegDefense with the latest technological advances in computing speed. The utility is compatible with 64 bit systems as well as with the Windows 7 operating system, something that it goes to great pains to point out in a comparison chart. The only problem with the chart is that its accuracy is not up-to-date. The chart shows one competitor's utility as not having scheduled scan capability, an ignore list feature, or a startup manager. When we checked this competitor's product we found that each of these areas had indeed been addressed within the framework of their software product.

Overall, RegDefense is a useful registry repair tool that does the main job of repairing the registry without a lot of the additional bells and whistles that other registry cleaners have. Perhaps this is why Xionix is able to offer it at a competitive price level in comparison with some of its more expensive rivals.

If you're reading this registry repair review looking for an effective registry utility while not spending a lot of money, RegDefense will do the job it is asked to do, and it will do it very well indeed. As long as you don't mind missing out on some of the extra features that other more expensive repair programs have, RegDefense will fill the bill as a reliable registry cleaner. For slow running computer systems, RegDefense should help get it back up to speed in no time flat.
